More flexible layout The sharper corporate focus on flexibility has not only become manifest in a call for shorter contractual com mitment terms but has also shaped new requirements in terms of office layout. In the aftermath of the pandemic, it was widely believed that businesses could make do with less space because working from home would become a part of daily work routines, in the process reducing the required number of workstations in the actual workplace. However, although homeworking is here to stay, we see no conclusive signs pointing to a reduction in area requirements. One expla nation is that workers have started to make entirely dif ferent demands in terms of office layout, and many of
them feel that the alternative to homeworking needs to be something different and better than merely an office desk in an open-plan office. For instance, we see budding signs of businesses discard ing traditional office landscapes involving cell- or single offices or open-plan offices. Organisations are increas ingly embracing activity-based working, that is, offices fitted up to support the work activities required to carry out specific tasks. The aim is to allow for flexibility, allow ing the individual worker to freely move to a space with a configuration supporting exactly the workflow that the activities require. As a result, the traditional permanent office desk of the past is giving way to offices offering a range of different spaces, some supporting teamwork,
