Future transport market

Autonomous trucking soon a reality

If platooning gains currency, it may potentially solve the truck driver shortage that is a structural problem in the transport sector in Denmark and several other countries. In addition, it offers substantial climate gains because it makes it possible to transport a larger quantity of goods in one haul. In early 2022, Denmark started to test so-called duo trailers between the Port of Aarhus and Høje-Taastrup. The method introduces truck lengths of 32 metres rel ative to the 25.25 metres today marking the maximum length allowed on selected stretches. It will allow for the simultaneous freight of 66 europallets compared to 52 pallets today. This may potentially reduce carbon emis sions by 27% compared to standard 17-metre trucks. The overall impact on the property industry is dif ficult to gauge at this stage. However, if the tested ways of high-volume transport become an option, storage/logistics facilities allowing for road-train access will become more attractive in the eyes of users and investors. Obviously, this will fuel the demand for existing last mile locations, which to a great extent are considered prime locations already attracting massive demand.

Practically self-driving trucks, or semi-autonomous truck platooning, are on the verge of becoming a reality. In Sweden, large truck manufacturers like Scania and Volvo have spent years developing and testing the technology, which pairs a manned lead vehicle with driverless following vehicles.
