Copenhagen Strøget/high street The following is a brief introduction to retail destinations in central Copenhagen, includ ing the Copenhagen high street, and other important retail destinations.
The Copenhagen high street Made up of the pedestrian streets of Strøget and Købmagergade, the Copenhagen high street runs some 1.8 km with specific locations considered either prime or secondary. Prime high-street retail locations are typi cally found at Østergade, the Amagertorv square and the upper end of Købmagergade, defined as the stretch from Amagertorv to the Skindergade area. Secondary loca tions include the remaining parts of Strøget, terminating at Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square), and the stretch of Købmagergade from Skindergade to Kultorvet and Frederiksborggade, including the Nørreport station area. Unlike other more localised shopping streets, Strøget is highly dependent on sales to tourists. As one of the most popular European metropolises, Copenhagen recorded a new high in terms of tourist overnight stays in 2024. From 2023 to 2024, the number of overnight stays in the city increased by 5.7%. From an economic perspective, overseas tourists are particularly sought after. It is worth noting that the high-spending Chinese tourists have not yet returned to the same extent as before the pandemic, despite the lifting of various restrictions. As a result, Visit Denmark has in fact decided to discontinue its marketing efforts and close its office in China.
Considered a flagship location, the Amagertorv area and the upper end of Købmagergade feature a mix of inter national brand retailers and the Illum department store. The area is experiencing high demand, and we see a general trend of more high-profile brands moving from other prime locations on Strøget, including Østergade, to move closer to Amagertorv. This includes brands such as Burberry and Gant. The exclusive brand Louis Vuitton has chosen to renew its presence in the area by moving into Café Norden's former premises, in close proximity of its current location. Louis Vuitton is expected to relocate in H1 2025. The relocation confirms that this part of Strøget is considered one of the most attractive and coveted retail locations in Copen hagen. Several international chains are taking notice and in January 2025, international luxury brand Tiffany & Co. opened its first flagship store in Copenhagen next to Illums Bolighus on Amagertorv. They previously had a shop-in-shop store in the Illum department store. Although more high-profile brands are moving from Østergade towards Amagertorv, there is still demand for space along Østergade. New tenants here include
