Home is no longer just a home However, it has been in the offing for quite some time that the home is no longer perceived as just a place to live. Some people increasingly view housing as a means to cre ate social ties, prompting a demand for buildings that sup port a new way of living. Senior living is one type of housing to have garnered atten tion in recent years. The ranks of the elderly are expanding substantially, now and in future. Across the entire country, senior housing schemes are mushrooming, including liv ing communities targeting seniors, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Senior living is tailored to cater to the requirements of the elderly in terms of layout or facilities that enable social interaction with co-residents. However, the elderly are not the only ones interested in co-liv ing: According to a Gallup survey, almost one in seven Danes would opt for co-living. This has made investors realise the potential of residential properties that typically have separate areas easily rearranged to support shared activities. There is a general trend towards housing becoming pop ular also with developers as they may target specific user groups in their marketing rather than merely offer a place to live. Many co-living developments, including those tar geting both the elderly and other residents, have mush roomed mainly in Greater Copenhagen, several of them now completed. Demand has been strong for several of

the developments, with people in some instances ready to queue up to get their name on the list to buy or rent a space. For instance, the co-living scheme of Plushusene at Nærheden, developed by M+ and NREP, is fully let. In addition, Bovieran – offering a senior co-living concept constructed as housing cooperative units by Balder and Sjælsø Management – has experienced massive demand. Their co-living schemes in the Zealand towns of Nærheden, Frederikssund, Ishøj and Frederiksværk reported all units sold prior to completion.
