Parcel lockers: The solution to low-performance shopping centre areas

E-commerce gaining market share from conventional retailing has intensified the pursuit of quicker and less costly deliveries, prompting several parcel delivery agents to offer a cheaper alternative where the parcel is not deli vered to the recipient’s home address but to a parcel locker for pickup. It is true that parcel lockers have cut delivery prices and lead times, but they have also involved costs of setting up delivery points across the country. Whereas such pickup points typically used to be found at the newsagent’s, petrol stations or grocery shops just around the corner, they have now started to spread to shopping centres and other prime locations, and quite successfully so. In fact, parcel lockers have turned out to be the new trump card of major shopping centres: a tenant that demands neither extrava gant advantages, nor a lot of space, but redirects substan tial footfall to the less busy parts of the shopping centre. However, it has still to be documented that this added foot fall increases the average basket size of shopping centre visitors, although it is expected to trigger additional sales, all other things being equal.
