To investigate the phenomenon of out-migration more closely, we looked at what characterises those who move from Copenhagen and Frederiksberg and where they move to. To do this, we analysed the movers on a number of parame ters and compared the results with a reference group consisting of existing residents in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg.

The conclusions of the analysis are as follows:

The movers have a higher dispos able family income than the refer ence group. Across the income distri bution in the two groups, i.e. from the lowest income earners to the high est income earners, relocating fami lies have a higher disposable income. This is partly due to a larger income base, because the family sizes are larger among the movers. The refer ence group also includes many stu dents with smaller incomes. Overall, it is primarily families with multiple sources of income that are leaving Copenhagen (e.g. couples or young families with children).

The movers are moving to dwell ings that are much larger than the ones they are leaving in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. Over half of them move to either detached or terraced houses, but a considerable propor tion remain in apartment blocks.

The movers are generally younger than the reference group and are often in a phase of life where they are starting a family. They also have larger families on average, which increases the need for space
