1992 Danish-German agreement on prefeasibility studies

FOLLOWING A PROLONGED APPROVAL PROCESS on the German side of the Fehmarn Belt, excavations for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link started in 2021. The tunnel will become Denmark’s largest infrastructure project, taking 8.5 years to build, with the link scheduled for commissioning in 2029. The tunnel will be 18 km long, connecting Rødbyhavn on the southernmost tip of the Danish island of Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn. The link will comprise two motor way lanes in either direction as well as two electrified railway tracks, with travel times of 10 and 7 minutes respectively by car and train. The completion of the Fehmarnbelt link will invariably change the way goods are distributed across Denmark, also affecting the logistics of Danish imports and exports between Greater Copenhagen and economies south of the border. According to multiple analyses, the construction of the link will confer sub stantial financial gains on the southern part of the Zealand Region due to the inflow of businesses and inhabitants. Mainly municipalities like Lolland, Guldborgsund, Vordingborg, Stevns and Næstved stand to benefit from the new link, all having in fact already initiated the development of new commercial areas, or the expansion of existing ones, with an emphasis on transport-oriented businesses. Investors would therefore do well to keep a close eye on developments in these areas as attractive opportunities are likely to arise.
